1 To every thing
there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven;
2 A time to be born, and a time to die; a time
to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;
3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to
break down, and a time to build up;
4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time
to mourn, and a time to dance;
5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to
gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from
embracing;
6 A time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to
keep, and a time to cast away;
7 A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to
keep silence, and a time to speak;
8 A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of
war, and a time of peace.
9 What gains has he who works in that in which
he labors?
10 I have seen the occupation which God has
given men to be concerned with.
11 He has made every thing
beautiful in his time; also he has set the mystery of the world in their heart,
so that no man can find out the work which God has made from the beginning to
the end.
12 I know that there is nothing better for
them, than to rejoice, and to do good in their life.
13 And also that it is the gift of God that
every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor.
14 I know that, whatever God does, it shall be
for ever; nothing can be added to it, nor any thing taken from it; and God does
it, that men should fear before him.
15 That which is, already has been; and that
which is to be has already been; and God seeks what has been driven away.
16 And moreover I saw under the sun that in the
place of judgment wickedness was there; and that in the place of righteousness,
iniquity was there.
17 I said in my heart, God shall judge the
righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for
every work.
18 I said in my heart concerning the sons of
men, that God is testing them, that they might see that they are but beasts.
19 For that which befalls the sons of men
befalls beasts; one thing befalls them both; as the one dies, so dies the
other. They have all one breath; so that a man has no preeminence
over a beast; for all is vanity.
20 All go to one place; all are from the dust,
and all turn to dust again.
21 Who knows whether the spirit of man goes
upward, and the spirit of the beast goes downward to the earth?
22 So I saw that there is nothing better, than
that a man should rejoice in his work; for that is his portion; who can bring
him to see what shall be after him?

1 Alles hat Zeit und Stunde, alles Wollen, unter dem Himmel: / 2 Zeit fürs Gebären und Zeit fürs Sterben / Zeit fürs Pflanzen und 3 Zeit fürs Auareißen des Gepflanzten; / Zeit fürs Töten und Zeit fürs Heilen 4/ Zeit fürs Einreißen und Zeit fürs Auf baun; / Zeit fürs Weinen und Zeit fürs Lachen / Zeit des Klagens und Zeit 5 des Tanzens; / Zeit fürs Steine werfen und Zeit fürs Steine sammeln / Zeit fürs Umarmen und Zeit fürs Meiden der Umar6 mung; / Zeit fürs Suchen und Zeit fürs Verlorengehen 7/ Zeit fürs Bewahren und Zeit fürs Fortwerfen; / Zeit fürs Reißen und 8 Zeit fürs Nähen / Zeit fürs Schweigen und Zeit fürs Reden; / Zeit fürs Lieben und Zeit fürs Hassen / Zeit des Kriegs und Zeit des Friedens.
9 Was bleibt dem Schaffenden
bei dem, womit er sich müht? * Ich io sah die
Aufgabe, die Gott den Menschen gegeben hat, sich damit 10 zu befassen. * Alles
hat er gemacht: Passend zu seiner Zeit. Auch das Ewige hat er in ihren Sinn
gelegt - nur daß der Mensch das Werk, das Gott
gewirkt, nicht finden kann - von Anbeginn bis 12 zuende.
* Ich erkannte, daß es dabei kein Glück gibt, als
sich zu 13 freuen und sichs wohl sein zu lassen in
seinem Leben. * Aber auch, daß jeglicher Mensch ißt und trinkt und Glück genießt an 14 all seiner Mühe, ist
Gottes Gabe. * Ich erkannte, daß alles, was Gott tut,
für ewig besteht, dazu ist nichts hinzuzufügen und davon nichts zu nehmen, und
Gott hat es so eingerichtet, daß man 15 sich vor ihm fürchte. * Was war, ist
längst dahin, und was sein soll, längst gewesen; und Gott sucht das einander
Folgende. 16 Und weiter sah ich unter der Sonne: An Rechtes Statt
war Un17 recht, und an der Stätte der Gerechtigkeit - das Unrecht. * Ich
sprach zu meinem Herzen: Den Gerechten und Ungerechten wird Gott richten ---
denn eine Zeit gibts für alles Wollen -- und 18 alle
Tat daselbst. * Und ich sprach in meinem Herzen nach der Weise der Menschen: Daß Gott sie auserwählt habe. Aber um 19 einzusehn, daß sie nur sind, wie
das Vieh ist, * denn das Geschick der Menschen und das Geschick des Viehs --
ein und dasselbe Geschick haben sie: Wie das stirbt, so stirbt der, und einen
Odem haben alle, und einen Vorzug des Menschen vor dem zo
Vieh gibt es nicht, denn alles ist eitel. * Alles geht an einen Ort: Alles ist
aus dem Staub geworden, und alles kehrt zum Staub zu21 rück. * Wer weiß, ob
der Geist der Menschen nach oben empor22 steigt, und ob der Geist des Viehs
zur Erde hinabfährt? * So sah ich, daß es nichts
Besseres gibt, als daß der Mensch sich freue an
seinen Werken, denn das ist sein Anteil; denn wer kann ihn hinbringen, zu
sehen, was nach ihm sein wird?
